Is it appropriate to bill E&M codes for Mid-Levels providing Chemo drug education during a telemedicine visit? If so, how can the MDM guidelines be applied in selecting a code level? Also, what codes would be recommended for Mid level providers to use when billing for drug treatment education? Would 98960-98962 be the preferable options?

  • Yes, E/M codes are appropriate for mid-levels doing chemo education if the visit involves individualized assessment and risk counseling. Apply MDM criteria — high-risk drug therapy usually supports at least 99214. 98960–98962 are technically available for patient education but are usually less reimbursable and less widely covered.
