I was hoping someone might be able to assist me.

I do not bill for pediatrics, and I was asked for help coding this and I am not sure which dx codes would be used for this. My thinking is that when coding for mild retardation due to hypothyroidism, I would first code the mild retardation, then the hypothyroidism. Since the mild retardation is "due to" the hypthoroidism, am I correct that it would that be listed first? And which hypothyroidism code would I need to use? (is this an implied congenital condition?)

thank you!

The guidelines specify that unless a chapter specific guideline states otherwise you code the underlying condition first. I suggest you check to see if there is anything regarding mental conditions otherwise the hypothyroidism goes first. As far as it being congenital I would still need to have the physician docuemnt this.
