My apologies for the cross post. Is anyone applying the modifier 51 to their codes or are they allowing the carrier to apply and discount?

We don't use modifier 51. We allow the carrier to apply this modifier and discount, if necessary.

I would say it would depend on your transmissions/claims system and office policy. Our system generates the physicians' pay based on the RVU of each procedure, so we have to use the 51 modifier on multiple procedures. Since the carrier reduces the payment on multiple procedures, the 51 modifier reduces the RVU so the physician doesn't get full payment for a procedure that we are only getting reduced payment for.
