We have a patient that came in for an MRI of the cervical spine and after only taking one sequence, the patient stated he cannot take it and will have to reschedule after he gets meds from his doctor to calm him down. Can we bill for the time spent and for the images taken before the test was discontinued using modifier 52?

I would use -53 for insurance purposes. I know when i code colonoscopies and the patient cant tolerate the procedure we bill it with a mod 53 so insurance will pay part of the 1st procedure and also pay for the rescheduled 2nd colonoscopy. I typically use a -52 if the surgeon makes the decision and doesn't complete a procedure, like doesn't open or close the operation site or steps in to assist another dr and only does a portion then its turned back over to the first dr. I hope this helps.
