I was audited recently and it was noted on the audit that when a CNP or PA dictates the consult for the physician and a mod 57 is used, "that it may not be necessary. If the nurse pracitioner is performing or assisting during the surgery, then modifier 57 may be appropriate. Further review is recommended."

Just wanted to know what other people thought about this. This is the first time I've heard of this with a restriction to be used only when the physician dictates it.

Any input would be appreciated.
