Does anyone use modifier 59 instead of modifier 51 when billing multiple procedures? The scenario is, two different procedures, two different anatomical sites, same date of service.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!
Thanks!
Debie W.

It depends on the procedures. If by definition they are already distince and separate then you have no need for the 59. If they would be bundled or a duplicate submission then you will need a 59 modifier to indicate distinct and separate. The 51 modifier will indicate that both were performed in the same session for discounting and if you use it it should go after the 59.
