HELLO Coding Professionals!

I recently started billing for a Psychotherapist and received a denial from Medicaid stating a modifier is required for CPT code 90834.

After doing some research, I think I should be using modifier - U8. I will rebill using this modifier, but I wanted confirmation from a seasoned therapy biller.

Also, if they are utilizing a LPC interns, are we able to bill for their services? If so, is there a modifier needed as well?

Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Thank you...in advance

I bill Texas Medicaid for a behavioral health group of providers of varied licensure. TMHP requires modifiers that align with the provider type. If the provider is an LMFT, U8 is the correct modifier. LPC should use AJ.

To my knowledge, Texas Medicaid does not allow counselors to bill for services provided by interns.

Hope this helps,

Chrissy

Does anyone know what is the correct modifier to use when billing a LMFT to Medicare? I billed claims with modifier HO, but they denied as unprocessable due to the modifier. Thank you for taking the time to read my question.
