Hi,
Would anyone know if when coding for MRI, if you code the diagnosis from the order
or from the radiologists report? I always learned that you code the actual diagnosis if you have it. But I was recently told that radiology was different and that you code from the order.

Thank you.
Linda

As per the guidelines, we always code disease rather than the symptom. If the patient comes in with symptom and after MRI is performed, the radiologists report states any condition which is related to the chief complaint, we can code the radiologist report. If the MRI findings are incidental to the chief complaint, code only the chief complaint.
