The doctor I work for is considering purchasing an MRI machine. We have some questions on how these services should be billed. Both inside and outside referrals would be accepted. We would be paying a radiologist to read the images so we would bill for both the technical and professional components. Does this need a seperate facility contract to be billed under? Can it be billed under the physcian who owns the machine? Or maybe under the radiologist?

HELP!

You'll need to look at the anti-markup rules in the CMS Claims Processing Manual to start with, (chapter 1, section 30.2.9; and chapter 13, section 20.3); and get your healthcare attorney involved in the process. You may be required to credential as an IDTF - it depends partly on how many exams you will be doing for other physicians patients.
