Can 2 assistants at surgery be billed? A provider has been using two assists on procedures more complex, (CPT does allow assist) one of the assists is a PA and the other is MD, and they are all in the same specialty. From my understanding only one assistant will get paid with the proper documentation and modifier. Not sure how to go about this. I thought about having a co-surgeon and assist. Any guidance would be great!

Only one assist is billable. We enter a tracking code for the second assist - they would get compensated via an internal transfer. A co-surgery is completely different and many payers would not additionally pay for an assist in this situation, eg Medicare, UHC...
