I am confused about this. NAFLD is coded as K76.0 and as I understand it "fatty change in liver" as included in the description for this code includes the cirrhosis. It is basically synonymous with the word cirrhosis as in fatty liver disease. Is an additional code needed for the Cirrhosis or does the "fatty change in liver" fully describe this disease process? The only reason I asked is because our Dr's are coding this as k74.60 which I feel is obviously wrong because alphabetic index leads you to k76.0 when looking up cirrhosis, fatty. My interpretation of the guidelines in ICD-10 have no pull as no one understands dx coding and how the codes are clinically modified, please advise. They think they can just slap down an unspecified code and don't want to think about it anymore or try to understand. I think I'm going to need a Xanax when I go to look at the chart pulls again tomorrow.
