will these up and coming, rules-based, voice/text recognition programs render human coders obsolete?
will our future be to educate physicians in the language of coding?
 
Coders obsolete?

With the new EMRs and practice management programs yes our roles will change, but there will always be a need for the human coder.

If done properly having a new EMR in a physician office should streamline process and make our time be used more efficiently. It may cause some staff reduction, but in my experience with computers and software, it generally creates more work - not less.

Back in the '80s people were afraid of the 'paperless office' but I haven't seen it yet :o

Keep up your skills, get certified in ICD-10, learn more about anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology and you should be able to keep on coding.
