How would you code for taking a nasal swab to send to an outside lab for testing for RSV?:confused

RSV swab

Hi,

I don't think you can code for a nasal swab; it's just like a throat culture. You could try to code for specimen handling, 99000, but morelikely the insurance will deny that one or pay a bare minimum.
The CPT manual states:
99000 Handling and/or conveyance of specimen for transfer from the physician's office to a laboratory.

Hope this helps,
Barbara Andrade, CPC :)
