If a patient presents to the office for a screening mammogram and based on the results the radiologist decides that a diagnostic mammogram is needed and the diagnositic mammo is performed at the same encounter or later the same day at different encounters, do you need to obtain a physician's or provider's order to perform the diagnostic mammo? Thanks.

Per the November 2001 ACR Bulletin: A physician who meets the statutory qualification requirements for an interpreting physician may order a diagnostic mammogram on the basis of the findings of a screening mammogram even though the physician does not treat the beneficiary.

I hope this helps.
