We have a patient who had surgery and is currently staying in a Rehab facility. The patient's two daughters came into our office and met with the doctor to discuss their mother's condition and medications, etc.

That night, on the way home, the doctor stopped by the rehab facility and visited with the patient and family. He obtained a full exam, discussed her prognosis, and diagnosed a UTI. How do I code this?

Thanks!
Valerie

My understanding is that the first part where the daughters came into the office can not be billed since the patient was not present.

However, the second part can be billed since it sounds like the patient was present. You would need to use the CPT codes that are designated for this place of service and you pick the code the same way as E/M in the office.

Are you the surgeon?

If you are coding for the surgeon who performed the surgery, your visit may be part of the global post-operative period.

Hope that helps.
