You’re in a great position, let me explain why.
Nine years in SNF coding is not a detour, it’s solid clinical coding experience that proves you can handle volume, medical necessity, reimbursement logic, and documentation challenges. In fact, many inpatient and outpatient coders don’t even get close to the depth of policy and interdisciplinary documentation SNF coding requires.
That said, I get it, HR systems filter based on
“inpatient” or “outpatient” experience, and SNF doesn’t check their box. Here’s how I would probably reframe that in the cover letter: "“While I have 9 years of experience specifically in SNF coding, my role consistently required interpretation of inpatient documentation, DRG/PDPM alignment, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. I’ve coded from provider documentation, used ICD-10-CM extensively, and followed CMS guidelines rigorously. I’m confident in translating this experience to either inpatient or outpatient settings and am actively expanding my training in ..........”
