Wiki Nephrology ESRD Billing Question

Does anyone know if the cause of ESRD needs to be on the claim form when billing for dialysis charges (other than ESRD and the Z code that is already on there) or does the cause just need to be in the notes?

ESRD codes

Hey Kim,

Is the ESRD caused by hypertension? If yes, would code I12.0 (hypertensive chronic kidney disease with stage 5 chronic kidney disease or end stage renal disease.) Then, there is a note following I12.0: "Use additional code to identify the stage of chronic kidney disease (N18.5, N18.6)"

In short, if ESRD is caused by hypertension, would go with: I12.0, N18.6, Z99.2

But, if the ESRD is NOT caused by hypertension, I think we just use the N18.6 and the Z code.

Thanks Jacob for helping me. We use those also, I worded my question wrong.
I meant the comorbidities, do you now have to list them on the claim with the ESRD and the cause?
