Outpatient Facility - Is there a diagnosis that can be used to cover a nerve block provided in surgery for post op pain management? This is not for chronic pain management, it is for post op pain management after the procedure.

Hi there, look at the G89.1- codes for diagnosis coding. For coding/billing the block, review Chapter II of the NCCI manual.

We use G89.18 for postop pain nerve blocks. I agree with the above that you should be familiar with the NCCI Manual Chapter 2. If performed by the surgeon it is included in the global package. However if an anesthesia provider performs then you need to make sure there is documentation from the surgeon requesting that the anesthesia provider perform the block (I tend to tell my providers to use an order that they can build into their EMR.) You also want this documented in a separate procedure note where the anesthesia provider documents that it was requested by the surgeon and it was specifically done for acute postop pain management.
