If a patient is admitted to the hospital on 9-27 and is rounded on everyday by the hospitalists, D/C'd on 10-4, does one switch to the new ICD-9 codes on Oct.1, or keep using the old codes till the D/C is coded? The reason for admit is a MRSA infection- these codes have been revised.
Thanks in advance for your help.

My guess would be the new ICD-9 because you are billing for the entire LOS which ended in the new guidelines window.

You would think yes, however some payors are not ready for the new codes and are still processing with the old codes.
