Can you charge an office visit for the first visit for a new ob patient? If an antepartum/lab flowsheet is started on the same day of service, doesn't that indicate the start of her OB care? If you can charge for the visit, what ICD-9 code is used?

If the patient is already diagnosed as pregnant then this visit is the start of the OB record. If the patient has not yet confirmed pregnant then you can charge an over with a V72.4- code

The office would have to diagnose the pregnancy, not just a home pregancy test, right? When we do the lab work, is that a V22.- code, or to the V74.4- code? Thanks for your help.

If the patient is not yet confirmed pregnant , home test does not count, the you can bill an ov with a V12.4-, (never V22.2). If the patient is confirmed pregnant by her PCP or other health care provider the you start the OB record and it is either V22.0 or V22.1
