I have 2 orthopedic surgeons working in the same practice, billing under the same EIN number:

1. A patient was seen by the first physician and was then was referred to the second physician "specifically because he specialized in hand injuries."

2. An E/M visit was already coded, however, the second physician wants to code a "second opinion" because of his hand sub-speciality.

My understanding is that the only time you can charge a second opinion code within the same practice is if the physicians are of different specialities...since they are both orthopedic surgeons, can this even be done? I don't think so...but I learn something new everyday!

Thanks for any input!!
