One of my OD's just asked for clarification. A patient was last seen for an eye exam 4+ yrs ago. A little over a year ago she brought in an outside prescription to purchase frames and lenses from us. Today she was seen for an eye exam. OD wanted to code it a new visit. Tech said no because she was here within three years. I agree with OD. She was here but not for an exam or even a medical visit. I say it should be coded as a new pt. Who is correct?

Thanks for your help!

As long as the patient has not been seen by a Dr. in your practice in the last 3 years she is a new patient.
