I'm one of the many people working on building their coding career! I am wondering, do you suppose the 8+ years I have working for a large hospital in the Perioperative department - a fast-paced environment- will help my odds? Of COURSE I'd love to bypass taking on yet another entry level position to get into my new career, and I feel ready! I've mastered my CURRENT entry-level position, and I really don't want to start a whole new one. I'm ready to do this! lol

I was a receptionist for a doctor's office when I earned my CPC-A, which doesn't 100% pertain to coding, but I just asked my employer to verify that my responsibilities included having a familiar knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, ICD codes etc, and that I used them regularly - so for me, that was using them when calling insurance companies for benefit verification and selecting the correct HCPCS + ICD-10 code, and things like that. When I sent that info into AAPC my apprentice status was removed. I am not sure what your current responsibilities involve, but if you are using the codesets at all in your work day, then you should be able to have that -A taken off for work experience.
