Hey gang....I have just taken over billing for our hospital pathologist. This is a totally new area for me and for my staff. We are stumped on how to bill a "normal placenta." Any suggestions?

Code the reason the placenta was sent to you.....ie:
c-section primary 669.71
c-section other than prim 654.21
Meconium 656.81
generic 656.71 or 656.91

Make sure you add the icd9 for multiples as well.

If it is a third trimester placenta that was examined and diagnosed, it is 88307 regardless of findings.
