I have a situation where my NP saw a patient in a nursing home and coded as an initial visit. Two days later, the patient was transferred to a hospital, where our doctor saw her and coded as an initial visit. They both work under the same umbrella NPI. Is this okay, or does the doctor need to code differently?

I do not think that NP can bill for an initial visit in a SNF as a CMS requires the physician to do the Initial comprehensive visit. I have heard that the NP can see the resident prior to the physician's initial visit and bill as a subsequent visit, but I am still trying to find that in writing. I would be interested in seeing other responses.
