In the latest aapc magazine, it talks about 99219 and 99217 observation care for ob patient w/ pre-term labor. When we have an ob patient who is inpatient, we use 99221 as initial and then 99231 as subsequent and then 99238 for discharge. Is that ok? Or do we need to be billing the observation codes listed above? Not sure what the difference will be. Any help would be appreciated.

It depends on the patient's status. If they are observation status, you would use the observation codes 99219, 99217 etc. If the patient is inpatient status, you would use those codes. 99221-99223, etc.
