Good morning

I recently met with a dietician to go over guidelines for billing MNT services (97802-97804).

Per CMS guidelines, qualifying diagnoses for billing these services are diabetes, non-dialysis kidney disease, and status post kidney transplant.

She had asked if she could bill Obesity (w BMI) as a primary code if the patient doesn't have any of the diagnoses above.

Is anyone familiar with guidelines if obesity is the only diagnosis used? If so, can some links be provided?

Thank you!

Good afternoon. From my understanding and experience, it depends on the payor. If it's a Medicare or Medicare replacement plan, a qualifying diagnosis is required. The BMI and/or obesity diagnosis wouldn't suffice. Hope this helps.
