Hello. I have a question regarding Observation Status at hospitals.
A patient comes to the ER and is placed into an "Observation" status. Our physician is then called in for a consult and may or may not perform surgery on the patient. The patient is then later discharged from the facility.
In this case, using initial observation codes 99218-99220 would be used, correct? Then the subsequent visits would be 99224-99226, correct?
Thanks!

Who is admitting the patient to observation? Only the admitting provider can bill the initial obs codes. Other providers will need to use the outpatient office codes (99201-99205, 99212-99215) unless the patient's insurance allows consult codes still.

Another physician is admitting the patient.
