When billing an office code (99201-205/99211-99215), with an add on psychotherapy code (90833/90836/90838), is the patient being seen for the office visit time, then the psychotherapy time, or can the two codes be billed for the same time period?
 
It can be the same session but you need to keep the medication management and psychotherapy separate. Time spent for medication mgt cannot be counted towards the psychotherapy time and what is discussed during psychotherapy cannot be used to determine the E&M level.
