Is there a cpt code for a mother that comes in to discuss her minor son's marijuana abuse and the effects on his add medication?

This depends on the payer to some extent but from a CPT perspective, an E/M service may be reported if the time of the face-to-face encounter with the mother was documented and the discussion was about the son's medical problems as opposed to the mother's feelings about the problem (that would be a service to the mother). CPT states that time spent with the patient and/or family is used in selecting a level of service based on time spent counseling and/or coordinating care. Services may also be reported based on time when time is spent with non-family members who have assumed care and decision making for a patient.

Hope this helps.
