Hello fellow coders ~ I'm trying to find an answer to oncology coding. I have a patient who has finished chemo treatment for breast cancer. She has had the all clear, but is on a 5 year oral chemo treatment for maintenance. How would this be coded?? History of or active treatment? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I was told yesterday at an AHEC conference, if the disease is being treated, it is coded as active. It becomes Hx of after treatment has completed. The meeting was on HCC but that question actually came up and that was the answer given to the audience. Hope that helps. TUH

We code as active so long as there is some sort of treatment directed at the malignancy, which would include oral chemo or tamoxifen or similar treatments.

Bcg treatments/current vs active bld ca icd 10

my question is bladder cancer related. my doctor insists that since he's administering BCG as a maintenance, the ICD 10 should be Z85.51 history of not current C67.9. Am I wrong in correcting him as I feel he is still treating the diagnosis of current CA?

hoping I can receive an answer today as he is here in office.

thank you :)
