Looking for opinions on risk adjustment coding.. is this a good field to get into for someone relatively new to the coding world? Also, I will be taking a competency test for this position, I was told it would only cover ICD-9, this makes me almost as nervous as when I took my credentialing test. It is timed, 30 minutes with 30 questions. I do not see how anyone, especially someone new, could look up codes that fast, one question one minute.

Risk Adjustment Coding/HCC in my opinion is not a good way to start your Coding career unless you are well versed in ICD 9. If you are familiar with chronic conditions and how they should be documented then you are good. You also have to be familiar with condition manifestations. Study your ICD 9 guidelines. Good luck!
