Hi,
We are having trouble clarifying with our oral surgeon as to whether we should use D9220 or D9241 for his patients. As far as we can tell, the difference between these codes is solely that one is for deep sedation and one is for conscious sedation. Does anyone have any resources that can help us identify the exact difference between deep and conscious sedation so that we can pass it along to our surgeon to help him choose the correct code?

Thank you,
Christie Anna Ertel, CPC-A

In this case, does your physician have the patient in "deep" sedation or, is the patient just under MAC and can respond to commands? If so, I would code the D9241.

Hope this helps!!!
