My physician performed open reduction with internal fixation of a patient's left flail chest with fixation of 5 ribs via an anterior approach. He also did additional internal fixation on three of the ribs from a posterior approach, as well. Should I then only code for ORIF of 4-6 ribs, or ORIF of 7 or more ribs, since the posterior repair required a separate incision and approach?
