I have a question we have a visit where the patient is not admitted as observation or inpatient and not in the ED they are classified as on campus hospital which according to guidelines the appropriate cpt code selection would be 99203-99215 the patient is seen by the admitting physician on this day as outpatient then the physician admits the patient more than two days later and their follow up visit is a subsequent code for ip 99231-99233. My question is even though the physician saw the patient initially as outpatient hospital then days later after admission, would the subsequent visit be 99231-99233 since that is the first time they are seeing the patient after admit? Or would the 99203-99215 code selection be invalid and should be changed to IP/OBS codes 99221-99223 since that note was the initial visit to start the admission?
