Wiki Pacemaker question

pateint currently has 2 dual chamber pacemaker with current leads in the Ventricula and atrial

Procedure performed was:

Atrial lead placed transvenous

Old atrial lead capped

Pacemaker Generator/battery replaced and connected to New atrial lead and existing ventricular


Guidelines state -

For removal and replacement of pacemaker pulse generator and transvenous electrode(s), use 33233 in conjunction with either 33234 or 33235 and 33206-33208).

. If only a pulse generator is inserted or replaced without any right atrial and/or right ventricular lead(s) inserted or replaced, report the appropriate code for only pulse generator insertion or replacement based on the number of final existing lead(s) (33227, 33228, 33229 and 33262, 33263, 33264).

After further review – 33233 with 33206 vs 33208. This one I'm hung up on because Only atrial was replaced – but both were hooked up.



So do I code based on the number of final existing leads? Or the procedure actually accomplished as directed in coding clinics

Code on what was done. So you code for pacemaker insertion and what lead was inserted. In your case code 33206.
