Pt presents for severe low back pain. MRI L/S shows metastatic cancer to the spine, lung primary. Would I code 724.2 (LBP) or 338.3 (neoplastic related pain) or both?

I think it is neoplastic related pain, but it's better to query the provider for more specificity...anyway LBP not needed.

if you read your pain guidelines you will see that you do code the site code along with the pain code if the reason for the encounter is pain control, also the underlying cause of the pain in this case the neoplasm codes. If the reason for the visit is not pain mgt then code only the neoplasm codes.

I see I would code both as well as the neoplasms. Thanks for the information.
