I am applying for a pain mgmt coding position. I been billing and coding over 20 years but never this speciality. Can you give me any tips on this speciality???? I have coded for ortho, general surgery, urology and plastic. Stepping out another level of coding.

There was a similar question and here is response that I had:

I would review the local coverage determination policies for Facet joint injections, Epidurals, Trigger Point Injections, Vertebroplasty/Vertebral Augementation, and SI Joint Injections.

I would purchase AMA CPT Assistant online subscriptions. There is a lot coding references for pain management in that publication. I would also make sure you have the AMA CPT professional manual which has additiional guidance that the Optum book is not able to contain.

Additional resources: Supercoder, Medassets Revenue Cycle Solutions, Optum Encoder, AMA CPT Network

I also saw this book by Decision Health Advanced Guide for Coding Pain Management Procedures, 2013. The Decision Health Pain Management Decisions online program is also good.
