If during the office visit, the patient collects the vaginal sample not using a speculum (just using the swab) can the PAP smear be billed by the physician? The specimen would be sent to the lab for analysis.
Are you referring to Q0091 Screening Papanicolaou smear; obtaining, preparing and conveyance of cervical or vaginal smear to laboratory?
If so, you could consider Q0091-52 as your practice did prepare and convey to lab, but did not obtain.
Keep in mind Q0091 is really a Medicare code and commercial payors may or may not recognize and/or pay for it.
