I work for a CAH and we are experiencing difficulties placing patients after discharge due to a lack of availability in assisted living beds, nursing home beds and the like. The patients are unsafe to go home but we have nowhere to discharge the patient to, so they end up just staying at our facility in limbo until something opens up outside of our facility. These patients do not qualify for an observation stay or for a swing bed stay. Is there another status that these patients could qualify for with charges we could bill to try and recoup some of the recourses we are using to care for these patients? Even something we could set up at a self-pay level not billable to insurance? Any information or guidance would be much appreciated as we are experiencing a lot of these patients.
