When a patient has a PEA arrest and ends up in the ICU for multiple reasons (including cardiogenic shock), does the patient carry the PEA arrest diagnosis through their treatment or only on the admitting day?
For facility (DRG)- coding-Need to have complete documentation to have a comprehensive answer. Based on the inputs given in question. Cardiac arrest unspecified can be coded as there is no specific cause of cardiac arrest is not documented. Coming to the PDX if it is the reason necessitating the admission it will be eligible as PDX. If other conditions equally eligible for reason for admission and the outcome diagnosis is different that diagnosis would be PDX and cardiac arrest will be SDX as it is extending the length of stay.
For physician coding- Only the day cardiac arrest treated on that DOS will be coded not other DOS.
