Good Afternoon All,
Can anybody explain the difference between dx codes 771.89/Other infections specific to the perinatal period and 779.89/Other specified conditions originating in the perinatal period? I have a 2wk old infant dx with bacterial meningitis. Mom had an unremarkable pregnancy...no complications/issues. Some auditors feel 771.89 is inappropriate because the meninigitis was not acquired from mom; therefore, 779.89 should be assigned. But, bacterial meningitis is an infection, so whether it was passed from mom or not, shouldn't we still assign 771.89/Other INFECTIONS specific to the perinatal period? I'd appreciate any and all feedback you can provide. Thank you!
