Hello Everyone,

I work for a hospitalist billing company which also bills for physician's assistants. Some of our PA's do H&Ps for surgeries and some do post op follow ups. They have a different tax ID than the surgeon who performed the surgery.

We have looked over CMS guidelines and have different translations on the rules. Can someone please clarify if a PA with a different tax id can bill for follow up care post surgical?

Thank you SO MUCH for any guidelines!

Tamara B, CPC

no you cannot do this, the PA is considered to be same specialty as the surgeon so the post op is global regardless of if it is the surgeon or the PA.

Thank you!

Thank you for the information, we cannot seem to find clear, cut and dry direction on this. I will look for documentation from the angle of same specialty. I appreciate your response!:D

When advanced practice nurses and physician assistants are working with physicians they are considered as working in the exact same specialty and exact same subspecialties as the physician.

This i picked from CPT 2013 professional page # 5 under coding tip.

I think this can help to some extent.
