Are labs able to be billed from an Physician Office Laboratory in which there is not a physician onsite and patients are not seen at the site (specimen would be collected and transported to the Physician Office Lab)? The concern is if there is not a physician onsite, or patients are not seen at the site, then it makes the lab a Reference Laboratory, even though the lab is maintained by a group of physicians and is connected with a physician practice. After some research, I found the laboratory director must be be accessible to the lab to provide onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation as needed, and this would be true in this scenario.
