We have been advised TC only radiology services (X-rays, CTs and PETs) performed in a physician office setting do not require direct supervision. Does anyone have experience with this to confirm if it's true or not?

Thanks!
Tracy

It depends on the procedure actually. The CMS physician fee schedule assigns a 'physician supervision of diagnostic procedures' indicator to each code that specifies the level of supervision required. For most x-rays, the indicator for the technical component is '01' which is general supervision, but for procedures that involve administration of contrast, these require direct supervision. You can locate these indicators on the CMS web site in the Medicare section under Physician Fee Schedule.
