I work for Hospitalist in a teaching hospital. My docs do PICC's. Medicare states in it's teaching guidelines for surgical procedures; "In order to bill for surgical, high-risk, or other complex procedures, the teaching physician must be present during all critical and key portions of the procedure and be immediately available to furnish services during the entire procedure.

I know the PICC has no global period but is it still considered a minor procedure?

Medicare's definition for Minor Procedures
"For procedures that take only a few minutes (five minutes or less) to complete, e.g.,
simple suture, and involve relatively little decision making once the need for the
operation is determined, the teaching surgeon must be present for the entire procedure in
order to bill for the procedure".

PICC's take 30 mins. to hour.

Please help. We need this so we know how to document correctly.

Thanks
