Place of occurrence and the other codes in the external cause category are for use with injuries to identify the cause, intent and place where the injury occurred - I don't believe it would be appropriate for generalized heat exposure unless that was an accidental exposure to heat, such as an accidental exposure to heat in a kitchen device at home or at work, for example. In any case, external cause codes are not required, so I would not assign one in this case unless the payer has specifically requested it.
