I'm working on a CPT list looking for codes that should not be billed together.

If 2 codes are on the CCI edit lsit that says the codes may not be billed together (eg. 28296 &28285) but a modifer is allowed..does this mean then can be if we use modifier 59??

What if there are no CCI relationship? Does this mean the codes can be billed together? THANKS!

The 59 modifier may be used if the two procedures are two separate encounters or different anatomic sites. In your example, if 28296 were performed on one foot and 28285 performed on the other foot, it would be appropriate to add the 59 modifier. It would not be appropriate to use 59 for the same foot at a single encounter. Documentation would need to support either situation.

ok that's what the CCI edit means?
what if i enter 2 codes in the CCI edit and it displays "CCI relationship was not found"? does this mean the 2 codes may be billed together?

i appreciate your input.
