Here is my situation.

Pt was in the preop holding area being prepped for a urological procedure. The anesthesiologist administered Fentanyl. The patient went into tachycardia and had to immediately be taken to the emergency room. Is this a billable service? How would this be coded?

The patient never went into the operating room and the surgeon was never present. The surgery never took place.

I am only interested if the anesthesia service is billable and if so, how would this be coded?

Thank you!
Cheryl

Hi there, if there's enough documentation you should be able to bill an E/M service for the anesthesiologist's pre-op work up.
