Ok, I am an OP coder for a hospital. I have a case where the patient is a wound clinic patient at the hospital. The patient had surgery, an amputation of their toe. The patient was seen in follow up after their surgery for a post op visit by the physician who did the surgery, in the wound clinic. They are charging an E&M visit. I am told they have always done this and that global does not apply to the hospital. They also said they can do this because of split billing???? Can someone tell me if this is allowable and true.
Thanks!

I code for a Ortho a Group when our Doc's see patient's they've operated on in the office after Sx we bill as post-op. Split Billing is used when the Sx and post-op care are preformed by separate physician in agreement to share care. This agreement should be noted in the patient's medical chart.

thanks so much for the reply. I know in a physician's office you can't charge but not sure since this is an OP clinic, if they can charge because they are a facilty.
